Khmer folk stories have been passed down orally from generation to generation for centuries. Folklore first began being written down in the 18th century with the majority written down late in the 19th century. Many stories follow a Buddhist theme, similar to the Jataka, while others are local folktales teaching life lessons. Judge Rabbit is a main character in many folktales where he uses his intellect to overcome obstacles and help others.
